The Hunger Games is still going strong, even with a stiff competition from the newly release Wrath of the Titans and Mirror Mirror the big screen adaptation of the famous novel still grossed $61.1 million pushing its domestic cume to $251 million. Aside from maintaining its number one position in the domestic box office the Hunger Games also grossed the $250 million mark in only 10 days making it the fastest ever for a nonsequel film. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, 3D action pic Wrath of the Titans opened the weekend with $34.2 million almost a half short of the $61.2 opening of the Clash of the Titans two years ago. Although the film company is not worried with the early result because they already expected that the sequel wouldn’t match the opening numbers of the original film, since Clash of the Titans opened on Good Friday, a holiday. However, tracking had suggested Wrath would open in the $35 million to $40 million.
According to Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman, the decision on to open even with the NCAA Final Four and Hunger Games so that they could play through the heart of the holidays. He pointed out the the same thing happened to the film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows which also opened to substantially less than the first Sherlock Holmes, or $39.6 million versus $62.3 million, but that the sequel eventually caught up and has now surpassed the first film. Similar to Warners, Relativity released Mirror Mirror hoping to enjoy the strong traffic over the next two weeks. The film which stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer opened with $19 million, slightly lower than the expected low to mid $20 million range. This is a disappointing start for such a high-profile title which cost $85 million to make, excluding marketing costs.
